Wait Awhile, And The Weather Will Change: AnimeBoston 2013

Winner of the Tales of Yokai contest – Honne Onna

AnimeBoston definitely felt like a whirlwind this year. With more panels to attend to and more people to see. And with the incident of the Boston Marathon just yards away, it really didn’t seem like it. In fact it was very much con fever as usual.

This year the con fell on Memorial Day weekend and I dreaded the day when I would have to book my hotel. However the Omni Parker House saved the day for me by offering a holiday discount on their rooms., making my trip more affordable (not by much but just enough) than if I stayed near the Hynes. I love this hotel for all it’s historic, haunted glory – it was fit for a Lolita like myself.

Room for one plus a spooky view of church windows next door.

The room was listed as an “Economy Petite Room with Twin Bed” and I actually expected a closet. By New York standards this was not a closet. In fact it was perfectly suited for just one person and had a full-sized bed. Being smart I signed up for their rewards program and as a member received a complimetary morning beverage service and free internet to check my email, etc.

Adorable Bleach family cosplay.

Arriving Thursday I was able to get my pass early with no troubles at all. Friday I wasn’t sure what to expect expecially only a few weeks after the Boston Marathon incident. However I was quite impressed by the amount of security and bag checks taking place. As far as I had seen no one had caused a scene and everything went smoothly. I was also surprised by bag checks by an entrance into Artist’s Alley adjacent to the Sheraton.

This fox girl fits well with the Tales of Yokai theme.
Cranes made by staff and attendees to bring hope and well wishes for  Boston.

Attending opening ceremonies in the morning, the two things that I found stuck out was Tom Wayland referencing Kakurenbo and Ringu as a reference to this year’s theme: Tales of Yokai. Also that one of the big guests this year was ORIGA, who sang the entire opening theme to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

The Harajuku Fashion Panel on the first floor was a full house and gave some interesting incite on general street fashion and trends.

Next up was “Meet IBI” panel, featuring the designer of Sixh/Nine, who talked about his line. Like h.Naoto’s fashion lines, each has a distinctive look–with IBI it focused a lot on graphic design, having learned graphic design as a student above all else.

Sweet Mildred in Artist Alley

I took a break, grabbed some lunch in Chinatown and headed back to check out the rest of the con. The big difference this year that I saw was that the space for Artist’s Alley had gotten bigger. This improved from last year since I remember AA being quite crowded. At the same time this may mean that the Dealer’s Room is getting significantly smaller each year.

What we all waiting for – the fashion show lineup.

Saturday was an early start for me since the Lolita Fashion Show was at 10AM. I was a bit worried about the turn out but I was proven wrong with a pretty full house when the panel started. In a bigger room and slightly changed layout the girls did a great job. What caught me and everyone unawares was the models started their walk from the back of the room to the front. This was a good move since it allowed everyone to get a good snapshot.

Pho. Need I say more?

Afterwards I grabbed another friend, took the Green Line to Boylston, and ate pho in Chinatown. Boston surprisingly has very great pho restaurants.

Moon Prism Poptart: Looking Back at Sailormoon Fandom
Cute SailorMoon couple cosplay. My childhood friend and her husband are on the right.

My only other panel was SailorMoon fan panel so I snuck into the FUNiMation industry panel just in time to annouce the dub cast for Future Diary. Then I made may way up to the fan panel which a half hour before it started was already overflowing. Thankfully being a single person I managed to snag a seat.  Despite that, it was a great informative panel, comparing dubs to original Japanese, discussing what exactly is that “Moon Cycle” and rooms devoting solely to SailorMoon merchandise.

Who needs room service when you have a cupcake shop and a grilled cheese shop  within walking distance.

Sadly after that I said my goodbyes, caught a few more pictures, then heading back to the hotel for some dinner, packed up and rushed back to NYC like it had all been a daydream.

The Chocolate Bar at Cafe Fleuri

Things have been busy as I am in a wedding of a good friend of mine. And as she was counting down the days, I was traveling back and forth from New York to Boston to help out with the festivities.  Last weekend, I traveled for a bachelorette celebration.

Since there was going to be a lot of late night activity, I booked a hotel for all of us to avoid time constraints and the hassle of missing the trains (Boston’s MBTA shuts down around midnight, unlike NYC’s 24/7 subway system).  The Boston Common Hotel & Conference Center fit the bill, as I was looking for something central and easy to get to.  Behind the Hynes Convention Center and a short walk from Copley Square, this hotel is very unassuming.

At $100 a night for 3 people in the center of Boston it was a steal. When I went I was a skeptic at first since it was the weekend and a quiet corner.  However the room was very spacious compared to some closet-sized hotel rooms I’ve been to.  Since we were literally using it just as a place to sleep it was good for all we wanted.

We all met up at the Langham Hotel to partake in Cafe Fleuri’s Chocolate Bar – a buffet of the chocolate variety.  I ended up taking the Orange Line from the hotel to Downtown Crossing and walked along Franklin Street until I saw the hotel.  While The Chocolate Bar is a seasonal thing (Saturdays September to June), it was fortunate the bride’s bachelorette party was around that time.

For some reason I did not expect a literal chocolate buffet, but indeed there was and like our waiter told us, we “tried everything.”  From crepes to ice cream to tiny little cakes to cupcakes and, of course, a fondue fountain.

Third Course.

There was even a DJ in the corner for upbeat entertainment as you try to take as many tiny dishes as possible.  As much as I wanted to photograph everything, I also wanted to eat everything so a lot of the food did not get recorded.  The two plates below managed to survive unscathed.  Then again it was a lot of chocolate.

Madeleine and Passionfruit Tart
Some type of mousse with white chocolate chips.

However for an all-you-can-eat buffet it was well worth $40 (tax and tip not included).  This also included unlimited tea and coffee, which I gladly took advantage of to balance out all the chocolate.  Hopefully I will be able to go again sometime before this year’s season’s over. Though for any size groups I recommend making a reservation for prime seating.

Cupcake of the Week: Cakeology

Boston’s winding streets meant discovering everything at every corner.  This van was parked by Breugger’s on School Street. Little did I realize that the store was right behind the hotel. That is until we walked back up the street.

Have any Bostonians tried this Cakeology? What did you think?

Street Snaps – Anime Boston 2012

La Vida Frills is headlining street snaps post again

This was my first AnimeBoston as press and as a general attendee.  Living in New York and getting to know alot of Lolitas within my own city, I was unsure what the scene would be like in Boston. Surprisingly I met some wonderful people and did lots of picture taking.

If I’ve taken a photo of you and would like me to take it down. Please feel free to send me an email.

Two Cons, One City – Anime Boston 2012

AnimeBoston 2012

If you ever go to Ithaca, NY you’ll notice the maps will include Cornell University and Ithaca College.  Everyone is familiar with Cornell and its Ivy-League prestige, and Ithaca College is also a great school — in its own right.  You really can’t compare the two just like you couldn’t really compare AnimeBoston and PAX East

Thanks to an unusual case of double booking, both cons took place Easter weekend. A few people were actually concerned about whether one would overtake the other.  In my opinion, it only benefited by bringing in more people to a great city. Especially when they catered to entirely different crowds (one being anime/cosplay and the gaming) with a slight amount of intermixing.

Very from our hotel.

I often tell people I’m originally from Boston, often because it comes up when my phone number is still a Massachusetts number.  Ironically living in Queens leads to further confusion.  Going to Boston was kind of returning home, even though I was a tourist this time around.

Omni Parker House

Taking advantage of PAX, I stayed at the Omni Parker House. Not only is it a historic landmark but it’s rumored to be haunted as well!  It was very also convenient that the hotel was within walking distance from the subway. An ideal spot for touristy adventures.

Gilded elevators.

Before picking my badge I decided to visit a few places I often did in my childhood.  This often mean walking around the Commons, and visiting Harvard Square.

Cherry Blossoms in bloom at the Commons
The Indie’s Mall.
Local tea and coffee shop.
Airbrush Street Artist.

Not much has really change, except that it felt very much like a college town.  The Garage used to be an old haunt because it was one of the few places that sold anime and Japanese merchandise straight from Japan.  Now with the industry nonexistent and merchandise found regularly in what little entertainment stores there are left.

Thai for lunch.

The other reason was to reconnect with an old college friend.  9Tastes was a popular Thai place with a naturally busy lunch turnover with students and the like.

Green Line Subway Station. Very different from NYC.

One interesting thing I found while riding the “T” was that whether you were young or old or not into anime, you new what AnimeBoston.  Probably because during the convention is when anime fans tend to over run the Prudential Center/Hynes Convention Center to an unhealthy and annoying degree.

This was my first year being press and an attendee in a long while.  I went to three panels I most wanted to see, and the rest of the convention was mostly catching memorable moments.

Hsien-Ko and Lillith
Digimon and Adventure seemed to be the top cosplay.
A Seraphic Trio.
Casual Cosplay of Double-H from Mawaru Penguindrum
Convention Rotunda
Road Kamelot from D. Grayman
Scene was very fitting.
Disney characters were also very popular.
I think I’m one of the few that actually watched this show.
Rin from Fate/Stay Night

Eva Unit 01
Plumber Peach
I commend this person for pulling this cosplay off.

Mint from h. Naoto was a guest talking about his new line MintNeko.  Like sixh, the line that Mint collaborates with Ibi, MintNeko is inspired by music.  I had seen both of them at Otakon last year and my memory was of Mint dancing with one of his cat bags. I was very curious as to why he was a solo guest, but understood afterwards.

With MintNeko he can concentrate on the more stylist aesthestics, whereas Ibi is supposedly more conceptual.  Unfortunately, while Mint’s panel was large it was also largely empty. Whether it was because it was tucked away in the Sheraton or people simply didn’t know, I may never know the reason.

A Very Genki Portrait.

Sakurai Takamasa was another guest in a reasonable sized panel room in the Hynes. If anyone is reading this, he was a guest promoting soft power and learning about international anime fans. Which to him are no different than any other fan of Japanese culture, no matter where they are from.  He had a slideshow of a selection of places he had been to.  At the end he showed a trailer of Okami Kodomo No Ame To Yuki directed by Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars, Girl Who Lept Through Time), and gave away a poster. However his simple question of who likes Natsuki (?), but the entire audience was stumped and he solved this problem by playing Jan-Ken-Pon.

The Lolita Fashion Show was a big highlight of the con for attendees and Lolitas. The line stretched from end to end of the convention floor. To be frank, I’ve actually never really been to a Lolita 101 panel, however the girls giving the panel covered it very well. Especially when it was just the two of them and about a good hundred or so of fans.  I did try to take a few shots of the fashion show, but I felt that the models walked a bit too fast. However the sixH fashion show was scheduled at a similar time, and it was safe to assume that most of the participants wanted to try to catch the other show going out.

Overall I had a great time and if I had the opportunity will go again.  Especially if it gave me the chance to take photos like the ones above again.

Did you go to AnimeBoston? What did you think compared to previous years?

Cupcake of the Week: Sweet

Craving Sweet.

Last weekend, my fiance and I were in Boston for AnimeBoston and PAX East. We discovered that Sweet was literally down the street from the Omni Parker House when we were looking for Friday dinner options.

Camera phones don’t do justice.

My fiance surprised me with two cupcakes after returning from AnimeBoston on Saturday. One was Banana Split and the other Sweet Cake.  Definitely prefer the Banana Split – it was extremely light and you could taste really taste the banana.  And the spoon was an excellent touch.
