Street Snaps: Kawaii Meets Art and Fashion at Japan Society

Sketch of the Time After Time capsule art project for New York City.  Will debut later this year.

Last month, I went see Sebastian Masuda spoke on his artistic journey as well as the history and “real” meaning of Harajuku fashion at Japan Society.  Often people who are not familiar with Japanese pop culture think that “Harajuku fashion” is a definitive style of dress, similar to the silhouette of Lolita fashion.  Masuda says this is not the case but rather it is more about self-expression – so each person that has been captured in Fruits and Kera is expressing their style than a group style.

He also announced later this year he will be debuting another “time capsule” art project in New York City like he did at Art Basel Miami sometime in May.

Check out all the fashionably kawaii people I saw that night!

LBC: Who Inspires You in Lolita

Rufflecon

This will be a bit cheesy, but honestly the answer to whom I’m inspired by is all of you!  Since starting Lolita and the City and deciding to cover conventions and eventually creating my own version of “Street Snaps”, I’ve seen so many personal styles.

Rose Boudoir Tea Party
Tokyo Rebel/ Baby, Stars Shine Bright Opening
Sebastian Masuda Meet & Greet in Bryant Park
Japan Expo 2013

It gives me great joy seeing meet new people and see what they do with the basic guidelines of Lolita fashion.  Which in turn, inspires me to challenge myself with new styles and new outfits – appreciating the fashion and the passionate community.

Of course this is my own personal answer, check out below what other people’s inspirations are:

Street Snaps: Rufflecon 2014

In October 2014, I attended East Coasts first convention dedicated to alternative fashions. From Lolita to Gothic to Steampunk. It was a great sight to see everyone pulling out all the stops when it came to their outfits.

Street Snaps: Secret Rose Boudoir Tea Party

Last month, I had the opportunity to attend a grand tea party in Baltimore hosted by the lady behind Moss Marchen. Held in the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Baltimore, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to meet some 90+ fans of Lolita fashion.  While Otakon was occurring that same weekend, a good portion of people had attended just for this event alone!

It was certainly a grand affair which everyone pulled out all the stops when it came to their coordinates. I was very impressed, overwhelmed and blown away by the entire well-dressed crowd.

Street Snaps: ConnectiCon 2014

ConnectiCon is the main convention for Connecticut Lolitas to attend. And where there are Lolitas, I must attend!  It’s a small group but it’s growing.  I saw familiar faces and saw how they’ve grown into their own individual style. But I also saw people take “cosplay” and make it more like fashion.

Street Snaps – Tokyo Rebel/Baby, the Stars Shine Bright NYC Store Opening!

It was a momentous day on Saturday, July 19th.  Tokyo Rebel and Baby, the Stars Shine Bright opened its doors for business, attracting Lolitas and Japanese fashion lovers (and awe struck passerbys) far and wide (some as far as Canada!).

I managed to take a few girls in line who wanted to dress their best for the special occasion.

Street Snaps: 6%DokiDoki in Bryant Park

Sebastian Masuda, founder of 6%DokiDoki posing with fan.

Last month,  Sebastian Masuda took a trip to NYC and mentioned on his Facebook that he would like to meet some of his fans.  He picked Bryant Park as a meeting place, and I decided to meet people that are inspired by 6%Dokidoki.

It was an intimate affair of around 30-40 people.

Street Snaps: ConnectiCon 2013

It was my first time going to Connecticon and I had a great time.  Not only was it a nice break from the larger cons, like NYCC or Otakon, it was just as fun with plenty to do.  I was quite surprised by the amount of fashion statements for such a small convention.

AnimeNext was fill with all kinds of fashion. From Lolita to casual to more Lolita. Chess Story’s Starry Night Angel and Baby’s Strawberry Pie lucky packs were popular, as well as a good smattering of gothic coordinates (The weather was perfect for it — not too cold, not too hot).

These are in no particular order, please enjoy!
