Cupcake of the Week: Cupcake Currency

Sprinkles is known for being the first bakery that started the whole cupcake craze.  They are also known for Cupcake ATM machine — which is now coming to New York City.   Sometime in the future, the Sprinkles at 780-782 Lexington Ave will be expanding to make room to serve ice cream and other goodies.  This will also include the construction of an ATM machine, which will allow people to purchase a variety of Sprinkles cupcakes.

This is one ATM that requires no additional fee to use.

Liebster Blog Award!

Thanks to Kieli from Rainbow Star Candy for presenting me with this award! I’m glad you enjoy reading it so much!

This award goes to the underdogs who are just starting out or simple lost in the sea of bloggers out there.

“The origins of the Liebster Blog award are somewhat unclear but the general consensus is that it originated in Germany, Liebster meaning favourite or dearest, to showcase bloggers with fewer than 200 followers. Upon accepting the award the recipient can then pass it on to five more blogs of note. A way of introducing other bloggers to the blogs you enjoy.”

The rules:

1. Choose five up-and-coming blogs (with fewer than 200 followers) to award the Liebster to.

2. Show your thanks to the blogger who gave you the award by linking back to them.

3. Post the award on your blog. List the bloggers you are giving the award to with links to their sites. Leave comments on their blogs so they know about the award.

4. Share five random facts about yourself that people don’t know about you.

The lucky winners are :

Now for 5 random facts about me…

CFDA’s You Can’t Fake Fashion Bags 2.0

Picture of 2011 You Can’t Fake Fashion Bag

In New York City it’s very easy to find counterfeits, sadly to say. Just today, I overheard two tourists about how they planned to go to Chinatown to “get a bag.” It’s cheaper and just as good as the real thing. However it’s not the real thing and the feeling of buying a counterfeit is not the same as buying the real deal.  It also takes away hard-earned money and work and effort designers go through just to make these.

While Coach, Prada, and Louis Vuitton (or LV) are big brands, they still are hurt by the peddlers on the street.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America have teamed up with eBay’s Fashion Vault once again to bring shoppers and pro-activists together to promote the idea of support designers instead of counterfeiters. On Tuesday, March 20th, 2012 you can check out the bags or buy a blank canvas and design your own. This year will have four different styles: the duffle tote, the satchel tote, the gear tote, and the bucket tote.

One initiative they started was created generic canvas bags with the phrase “You Can’t Fake Fashion.” CFDA also asked several designers to created their own one-of-a-kind bag that is representing their brand.  The designer bags ($200) tend to go rather quickly, but you can purchase regular totes ($45) to decorate or leave as is.

I wholly recommend purchasing and supporting CFDA’s cause. Plus you always need a new bag. Check out my review on last year’s tote.

My personal favorites this year are Betsey Johnson, Robert Gellar, The Row, and Tommy Hilfiger. You preview some of the designer totes, and the regular ones at SheFinds.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

I feel like this is one of those obligatory holiday posts, but I wanted to wish anyone and everyone who reads Lolita and the City. It’s a slowly building brand which I hope to continue to despite this busy year.

Keep your eyes open for some new posts this coming weeks (and possible an anniversary giveaway).

Happy Holidays everyone!

(Feel free to tell me if you’ve gotten anything outstandingly stupendous that you need to share!)

You Can’t Fake Fashion

Replicas, knockoffs, bootlegs, whatever you call them they are not the real thing. In the Lolita world this is a big debate, and in the fashion industry it is a slap in the face to designers who have worked hard to define their brand and product as uniquely theirs.

NYC’s Chinatown is known as the mecca to find counterfeit goods — men and women come from all over just to find a cheaper version of the real thing. And everyone is sick of it and taking action.

Lolitas tend to go one way or another. On one hand it’s affordable and bespoked for more fuller figured girls. On the other hand it lowers the value of an actual brand item, and the quality is not as good as the real thing.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CDFA) have been constantly taking a stand against counterfeit goods. More active than ever, designers have become more active in contributing.

eBay and the CDFA have collaborate to create one-of-a-kind bags made by designers such as Donna Karan, Betsey Johnson, Badgley Mischka, etc.

For the most part each designer worked with a plain canvas tote bag emblazoned with the phrase “You Can’t Fake Fashion.” Naturally, these bags quickly sold out (at $150), but there are plain ones ($35) available for people to decorate, create, and, most-of-all, make a statement.

I would love to know what indie Lolita Designers would do to this bag. Fuzzy stars and pop-kei charms for Pretty Pop? Embroidered macarons and sweets from Little Macaron? A screen-printed skeletal outline by Morrigan?
