Ai Weiwei Sunflower Seeds 1/7 -2/4

Ai Weiwei’s Sunflower Seeds in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in London.

I discovered Ai Weiwei’s work while in London at the Tate Modern. I was fascinated by the fact that it was a simple exhibit of porcelain beads painted to look like sunflower seeds.  What was also amazing was that an entire Chinese town in Jingdezhen individually painted all of them.

The original idea was that the exhibit was meant to be walked on, but after a few days the dust it created was declared a health hazard and penned off. Personally while it would’ve been interested walking along a bed of porcelain, it was still very Zen to look at it.

And now if you head over toe the Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea, you’ll be able to experience it too. While the exhibit in New York won’t be as large it will certainly be impressive.

Top 6 Things to see before 2012

Time is a lot like chocolate – it’s gone before you know it.

The holidays are almost over and you’re pretty much set to start 2012. However there’s still plenty to do before you start counting down.

Here are my top picks:

Know anything else that is closing/expiring before 2012. Let’s hear them!

Sunday Brunch: Alice’s Tea Cup Chapter II

Alice’s Tea Cup is very reminiscent of childhood tea parties you use to have. Except instead of fruit punch you can have actual tea and real tea cakes. (Did I mention real cake?)

Chapter II is one of there most popular locations in New York City for lovers of pink and nostalgic for childhood fancies. As well as people who want a real tea party without the stiff and stuffy atmosphere.

Lolitas love to venture to Alice’s whenever they have the chance, and the wait staff are more than welcoming to those wearing dresses with maximum poofiness. With a short walk from Central Park and the popular shopping avenues–it’s no wonder that this place has wait times that are anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours.

I had been several times before, but wanted to introduce the other half to the place. Luckily we had our chance on a late Saturday brunch with a short wait of 15 minutes!

He was a bit skeptical at the thought of Afternoon Tea. He presumed tea and cakes would not be a whole meal, fully knowing that afternoon tea was more of a snack time for adults when lunch was at noon and dinner was served at 8 o’clock rather than around 6 o’clock nowadays.

However when the 3-tiered tray (a Mad Hatter’s tea for two) arrived every questionable thought disappeared at the sight of so much food.

Alice’s is very accomodating for vegetarians and with the tiered trays  you can to choose what you want as opposed to being presented with something you probably wouldn’t like (and garnished with caviar).

The setup is pretty standard with sandwiches on one tier, tea cakes on another, and light sweets at the very top (since it’s the smallest and one can go overboard when it comes to noshing on too many). And for the amount of food versus the price, it is well worth the wait for a table.

Also the tea is magnificent for it’s extremely long list and wide variety – from classic English blacks to purer greens and whites to herbal and fruity there’s something for everyone. And Alice’s Tea Cup maintains it’s kitschiness with no two cup and saucers are the same at the table. It also helped we both each got and emptied a pot of tea.

The decor helps you feel at home if you’ve never taken tea what with the multicolored butterfly wings and interpretative pictures of Alice Liddell (that’s the name of the real Alice on the wall) along the walls.  It’s a place that you can never tire of and always find something new.  Being my second time, I noticed the tables were refurbished vintage sewing machines.

There is a limit to Alice’s Tea Cup and that is you will probably take something home, which is not exactly a bad thing. As you can see the bottom tier became a doggy bag of sweets.

Alice’s Tea Cup does take reservations and have private dining areas for parties and “un-birthdays”, but I find it more fun to drop in and see if there’s room at the Mad Hatter’s tea party.

New York Chocolate Show 11/10 – 11/13

Designs from chocolate fashion show last year.

It’s never a bad time for chocolate. Especially when one prefers chocolate over roses (though I may reconsider for chocolate roses). The 14th Annual New York Chocolate Show has begun, but you’ve still got time.

What other plans have you made for this weekend? None? Well any plans made have been automatically overruled in the name of chocolate.

There’s workshops, artwork, and couture chocolate fashion. And, of course, free samples.

I strongly recommend the wasabi-flavored or 5th Avenue Chocolatier truffles (which taste great frozen, I learned).  Also get your tickets ahead of time, and perhaps a good book to read (the lines will be long, but worth it).

Artsy Fanart – New York Museum of Conan Art 10/31 – 11/3

If you have to time between now and Thurday (and a fan of Conan O’Brien) head uptown to time Warner Center to the New York Museum of Conan Art (or NY MOCA for short).  In town for a limited time – literally a treat for Conan fans.
And this is literally an exhibit dedicated the tall, ginger-coiffed talk host. However for a short time, he’s returned to his beloved New York City and his fans have welcomed him with fan art.
From night lights to color-by-numbers to hand-painted acrylic nails to a talking chair (yes a talking, orange chair which you can get your picture taken and get Conan swag), the MOCA is an exhibit that is for fans by fans.
Time Warner Center is a great location for this once-in-a-lifetime event, what with it’s mall-like atmosphere in a Upper West Side location. That’s why NYFW is at Lincoln Center, placing fashion at a higher level, closer to art. Each piece also had a QRC code so you can look it up. Or if you want to check it out the old-fashioned way, click here.
Onto the pictures!

FNO with LVF

NYFW has past, but FNO will always a memory of craziness.

Although it was my first time venture out for Fashion’s Night Out, I was not alone – Dalin from La Vida Frills decided to team up and find out what all the insanity was all about.

I do mean insanity.

Four hours to get into the Missoni @Target Pop-up Shop in Bryant Park. Kim Kardashian and Pauly D shut down DASH.  We were at none of these.

Our adventure took us to Sephora to (attempt to) see Kristen Bauer from True Blood. The store was packed to maximum capacity with four different lines (three for free hair and makeup sessions and one for celebrity photo-ops) snaking around the entire store and meshed together.

Kristin Bauer

Next stop was Opening Ceremony, where Manila Luzon was DJing. Again more lines, but plenty of carnival games. Opening Ceremony held another carnival, this time Argentinian theme (last year was Paris), with Muppets everywhere.  We couldn’t resist the call of a water gun race.

So good at this game she doesn’t need to look.

The night ended in SoHo hoping to find something that was not so line intensive and do some actually shopping.  Betsey Johnson started the night out with cupcakes and champagne and ended with champagne.  Tried on a bustle jacket that was instantly bought, and for my troubles the store offered me a free makeover.

@Betsey Johnson

The only advice I have for next year (If there is a next year.) is to plan ahead and keep to schedule.  (The people at Vogue are rumoring that it’s one giant party where nobody is carded and people aren’t shopping as much as expected, to be worth it.)

Were you at FNO? Was it crazy where you were?

Throw It in the Bag : Picks and Tips for Fashion’s Night Out

Three year’s ago when the economy was very down in the dumps and shopping was literally a guilt trip, Anna Wintour and her colleagues decided to get people out to the stores. As such, Fashion’s Night Out or FNO was born. An idea that began in New York has now spanned several cities, which grants people the opportunity to meet fashion celebs, win exclusive prizes, and of course, shop until you drop.

This year it falls on September 8, 2011 (just a few weeks away) starting at 6PM. Now it’s grown to overwhelming proportions, so I thought I’d give you some events that appeal to a Lolita-minded fashion lover’s heart.
