Runway Looks, Lolita Style – Ralph Lauren

Images via NYMAG

Ralph Lauren is sophisticated, clean, and European. So I suppose it’s know no wonder why he decided to use the theme to Downtown Abbey for his runway music (which I’m now desperately trying to find the video of).

Even without the video I can imagine the collection fitting with the music nicely what with the tweed and wool and lots of use of hats.

Anachronistic motorcyle outfits make a periodic outfit modern.

And I do love his use of menswear as womenswear.

A night at the opera or smoking lounge?

Periodic fashion is one of the core inspirations for Lolita.  Plus I love vintage, so this coordinate is inspired by a growing collection of vintage items.

Cloche from Strawberry – $25
Vintage jacket – $20
Vintage scarf – $10
Victorian Maiden blouse – $209
Metamorphose Tweed skirt – $100

Runway Looks, Lolita Style – Jason Wu

Fu (Wu)Manchu – Images via New York Magazine.

If you are unfamiliar with Jason Wu, he is one of the designers that Michelle Obama often wears. Also his collaboration collection with Target just came out and sold out (to the extent that a Florida couple bought the entire stock).

His designs are often very simple, but statement-worthy.  Originally I had planned to do a piece on Rag and Bone with their gradient hues, but I was blown away by Wu’s designs and the strong influence of Chinese royal regalia and Forbidden City (the entrance doors were inspired by palace doors!).

While most people may not understand the history symbolism behind it all, people can harken back to the pop culture archetypes of Fu Manchu (played by Christopher Lee no less!) and the infamous “dragon lady” (a sexy but fiesty Asian woman).

Wu’s power suit for the typical dragon lady.

As an Asian-American, it’s hard to embrace your culture without being a typical stereotype. It’s often like going uphill on a down escalator. Eventually you just have to accept your culture and incorporate it into your life.  Wu’s designs are solely him as a fashion designer and him showing his Chinese pride.

Maroon is definitely a color to use for fall.

Lolita fashion is all about breaking stereotypes, as well as embracing them. Qi-Lolita is a style that is influenced by the Chinese cheongsaam. A cheongsaam is a fitted silk dress with slits at the side with a mandarin-styled collar. It was developed in the 1920s and has become iconic with Chinese culture.

Cheongsaam/Qi Pao whatever you call it, it’s still fashion

Incoporating cultural elements and Lolita is very difficult. Done right, Qi-Lolita (based on the qipao; not to be confused with Wa-Lolita, which is based on the kimono) can be very cute.  Kidsyoyo’s design one of the tasteful versions I’ve seen that’s wearable as fashion, and not totally seen as a costume. This style comes in red and black (a popular color combo in general for the original style) or pink and brown.

Always Lolita.

Extremely Late for an Important Date: Tokyo Rebel Tea Party 8/22 in Pictures!

This is long, long, long over due, since this was in August and now it’s November with the leaves already on the ground (and we’ve already experienced our first snowfall!). So apologies to anyone and everyone who reads this.

In late August, Tokyo Rebel held its first tea party. First part of the event was a buffet at Cha-An, a Japanese teahouse in the East Village. The second half took place at their store for a live Skype conversation with Misako Aoki!

Decorations.
Place settings before people arrived.
So much delicious food.  Menu consisted of Teriyaki style meatballs, tofu quiche, chicken fried rice, smoked salmon, and green beans with sesame peanut sauce.
A little bit of everything. Everything was delicious. If you have the chance to go to Cha-An at another point in time, definitely go.
Everyone gave small introductions. It’s always interesting to learn about other people who got into Lolita. This girl is a teacher!
Green Tea Truffles
Making conversation before dessert course.
Strawberry Shortcake medley!
First groupshot before heading to Tokyo Rebe
I really wonder what people though as twenty some girls in frills walked down the street
Another groupshot in front of the store.
Shopgirl Meg and Giftbags!
Misako thinking. Definition of Kawaii
The Grand Prize Winner of the Best Coordinate/Outfit Contest goes to this lovely lady. What did she win: $300 gift certificate to spend in their store.
Tea Party Goodies: three postcards, a box of candied almonds, Baby, the Stars Shine bright wristcuffs (made especiallyfor the tea party), and a Thank you card(not pictured).
I couldn’t get enough sweets so me and a few friends dug into these cakes from the Cake Boss cafe in Discovery Times Center.

Tokyo Rebel posted the full transcript here and photos for curious readers.

Wedding Dress Shopping for Lolitas: Tips and Shop Recommendations

I now pronounce you Lolita and bunny bear. (Tokyo Fashion Festa 2010)

It’s a bit hard to envision a wedding when your a Lolita. And there are not alot of resources out there.  GeekMeNina is recently posting updates about her upcoming wedding. And there’s Pink Milk Tea‘s posts about her simple ceremony at City Hall.

Especially, if you want to incorporate your love of Lolita, but also have a wedding.  A real wedding, not a civil ceremony at City Hall.

This goes same with a dress.  If you’re a Lolita, you have a good sense of what looks good on you, what materials you want it, and how you want it to look. Not too plain, but not too shiny, and maybe a bit of lace.

Some tips for the newly engaged and wear Lolita and looking for a dress:

  • Marathon at least one season of Say Yes to the Dress. This gives you a good idea what you do or don’t want. It also saves you money if you don’t want to buy and flip through several wedding magazines. (Also once you have a dress, stop watching.)
  • Leave David’s Bridal as your last resort. There are plenty of salons in your budget (see below) if you just look. Also I’ve learned your information is also given out to affliated third party vendors.
  • The best way to set a budget if you’re a Lolita: imagine there’s your ultimate dress on an auction site. What’s the maximum limit you would spend on this dress? (Note: Another tip is use your monthly rent as a typical gauge of how much you’d like to spend)
  • Bring a close friend who’s into fashion or a Lolita.
  • Physically try on dresses before considering ordering online. You never know you’ll like it if you just try it on. Wedding dresses, I’ve found, look completely different on the hangar than on you.
  • Start with a boutique that sells more traditional styled dresses before thinking offbeat. You may find out you want a dress that’s more traditional after all.
  • How to tell it’s the dress: nothing else will matter if you get the dress. Even if your significant other plans to wear a certified replica Doctor Who suit.

I’m sure you are not here to listen about tips, but physical places to look. Here are list of boutiques I recommend you check out if you’re in the New York area, or are planning to head to New York City to shop for a dress if you city lacks in the bridal department.

Birnbaum and Bullock – What I love about this place is that their website has a specific webpage addressing “Alternative Sizing.” They understand that not everyone is a size 4. Also they make sure you are the only appointment in the atelier so you can take your time and not feel like another cog in the wedding machine.

Their dresses are a bit traditional, but also different from your typical wedding dress styles looks and a fan of retro styles.

Klienfield Bridal – If you want to go to Kleinfield’s for the sake of saying “I’ve been to Kleinfield’s,” then by all means go. No one is stopping you. They do have a large selection all in one place with a large number of price ranges. However, I recommend you know what you want in terms of a dress otherwise you may be shown a detailed dress out of your budget.

New York, NY 10011

Lovely Bridal Shop – Another place which I think would be good for Lolitas who are also into mori-girl or natural-kei. They have dresses by Ivy & Aster and Elizabeth Dye, which are great for girls who are interested in flowly, etheral dresses or thinking of marrying barefoot in an outdoor fall wedding in an apple orchard.

The Bridal Garden – A nonprofit boutique that has a variety of vintage to designer gowns. And all sales go to charity.

Suite 907
New York, NY 10018

RK Bridal – If you are a no frills girl who just wants to sift through dresses and pick out what you want. Note: This is a store you shouldn’t go alone. Bring someone who can at least carry the ones you want to try on.

Surreal Moment of NYCC 2011

Fandom is a weird disease that you catch like a cold. You don’t realize you have it, and once you do, it’s already too late. I’m not a big comic person, and even less of an anime person now, unless I know who the person is affliated to what pop culture reference, I’m very much out of the loop.
There were only two times I could say this was true or just very surreal. Seeing Wylie Dufresne, owner of WD-50, and seeing Sebastian Masuda, founder of %6 Doki Doki and the Might Harajuku Project. Attending the Food and Comics panel made me realize how much of a food fanatic I really am.  Discovering Masuda had been attending for the sake of attending was beyond surreal.
(Okay, a third surreal thing was meeting a blog reader I had never met in person.)
He apparently also knew about the tiny New York portion Mighty Harajuku Project I helped organize at Sakura Matsuri! I shouldn’t have been surprised, but it was probably still awe-struck seeing him in person.
However that was literally the ending moment of the convention for me. See more pictures of what happened earlier that day.
Note: If you’d like to use these pictures for your own reference, all that I ask is for credit of some kind. No one likes when their stuff is stolen, even if it’s a picture.

Streets Snaps – Lolitas at NYCC 2011

Dalin from La Vida Frills

I’ll be honest and tell you I did not see much at New York Comic Con this year. Mainly because I was doing one of three things: navigating through the Javits, buying lunch and last-minute supplies for people, and hiding from the crowds.

However I made sure that I had to see two panels: “She’s So Unusual” by Dalin from La Vida Frills and “Little Pink House on the Prairie” by Martha from Moss Garden.  And take some picture snaps of Lolitas if I could find any. Despite the lack of Lolita programming I did find quite a few girls.

Note: If you’d like to use these pictures for your own reference, all that I ask is for credit of some kind. No one likes when their stuff is stolen, even if it’s a picture.

Lolita at NYCC – Panels and Events

MintyMix booth from 2009

New York Comic Con (NYCC) is less than a week away (which is not a lot of time to plan an outfit). If you are a Lolita and have never been to NYCC or this is your first time dressing up in Lolita and want to meet other gals you should be reading this.

A convention is always fun, but also overwhelming. Crowds, lines, meeting new people, getting lost after seeing another Lolita for the first time.

A few tips for first-timers and regular congoers:

  • Make sure you’ve bought your ticket ahead of time. Crowds are intense just getting in.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. If you have rocking shoes just collecting dust, this is a perfect opportunity to wear them.
  • Money needs to be accessible, but not to others. (ATMs will have lines.)
  • If possible, bring food or plan out your restaurants ahead of time.
  • Ask the person if you are planning to take a pictures (No one likes stalkers.)
  • Staff people are there to help, so if you have any problems or wondering where the bathrooms are – ask a person wearing RED staff shirts.

To make things easier for you and your feet, I’ve highlighted several events and booths that you may be interested in checking out if you are attending. Also check out NYCC’s official blog Medium at Large for daily updates and panel highlights.

Throw It in the Bag : Picks and Tips for Fashion’s Night Out

Three year’s ago when the economy was very down in the dumps and shopping was literally a guilt trip, Anna Wintour and her colleagues decided to get people out to the stores. As such, Fashion’s Night Out or FNO was born. Out and About: Meet and Greet with Lolita Designers at Tokyo Rebel

Mistuba (left) and Masumi Kano (right)

With Otakon having taken up so much of my time, I barely had moments to enjoy myself (much less have time to eat). Which is why I was truly ecstatic when Tokyo Rebel announced they would be hosting a meet-and-greet session with designers Masumi Kano and Mitsuba on Monday, August 1st, 2011.

It was also a great opportunity for those who weren’t able to make it to Otakon, and for people like me, who prefered a more intimate one-on-one sitting — not to mention avoid hour long lines just for an autograph.

Tokyo Rebel asked those girls interested to RVSP ahead of time, with everyone going in groups of ten at a time so each person could have a few moments to speak with the designers. It was also beneficial to attendees to not feel claustrophobic with Tokyo Rebel being such a small store.

Girls were asked to arrive around 5-10 minutes ahead of time so as not to block the sidewalk from passerbys and the occassional dogwalker. There were girls who were local to the city, as well as a few as far as Connecticut just to see Kano-san and Mistuba. The wait time was about 10 minutes longer than expected, but it gave a chance for me to take a few snapshots of girls waiting.

Once my group was called, everyone formed a line for an autograph and then another for a photo-op. As soon as I was up, both designers smiled and giggled a bit since I had helped them out in Baltimore the day before. You were allowed to get one item and one postcard (of your choice), signed. Unfortunately the only pens were regular ink pens, and the autograph evidently rubbed off. The postcard was thankfully inside so no smudge there!

There was one last group photo with everyone, and after you were free to browse the store or leave. It seemed like everyone enjoyed themselves, and Tokyo Rebel accommodated latecomers by asking them to go in the last group

I do hope Tokyo Rebel continues events like these because it makes Lolita fashion more real seeing the people in person who wear Lolita and work in this particular fashion niche. In a way it also enforces one’s love of Lolita to continue wearing it.

The Traveling Lolita – Otakon 2011

Pepper Ink
It’s been at least a year since I’ve gone to a con, and two years since I’ve attended Otakon, one of the biggest conventions on the East Coast.  I had just gotten into Lolita and haven’t quite fully grasped that Baltimore is hotter and crazier than New York.
This year’s guests feature designers from Baby, the Stars Shine Bright and Alice and the Pirates – along with Ibi and Mint, designers of Sixh (a sub-brand of h.Naoto). There was also the Ultimate Lolita Fashion Show, a fashion show devoted to American designers. With Lolita being guests and part of the main events it was a must-see event, and a mini-vacation I could not pass up.
Initially I was unsure what to expect this year, and at my only priorities were the Lolita-focused fashion shows. All the while, I would tweet my adventures via Blackberry. Unfortunately my Blackberry could not take Baltimore heat and I had to survive sans smartphone.

However it was a weekend of adventures nonetheless. I attended a Lolita tea party at the Explorer’s Lounge, one of the restaurants within the Intercontinental Hotel, hosted by various girls from the community (specifically, I Do Declare, Moss Garden, Morrigan NYCPerianth, and Tea, Love, Crochet), shot some amazing photos of both fashion shows, and at the very last-minute decided to volunteer my time at the official BtSSB/AaTP booth.

I like many was surprised by their appearance in the dealer’s room, as well as their decision to donate items for the Charity Auction. And there translator for the weekend had known me from previous events, and asked if I was interested in helping out. They had needed a second person who spoke English, had some retail experience, and cover the booth while the designers were off to guest-related events.
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in itself, I got to assist Lolitas make the hard choice of choosing one item among many, as well as coax some confidence out of awe-struck girls for once in a lifetime photo-ops. (It was advantageously lucky of me that I was planning to wear both brands that weekend — specifically Chained Berry Memoir and Vampire Requiem.)
I talked to Lolitas, fans, and parents while their children showed them the reason they broke their piggy banks. The designers were more than happy to offer their expertise to ensure customers who were unsure whether a JSK or OP would fit.
Lily of the Valley, Little Macaron, Lolita Nouveau, Candy Threads
My Friday night was reserved for the Ultimate Lolita fashion show — a show which has grown from a small panel room to one of the main panel rooms, complete with catwalk. Models and designers alike worked the runway liked they were at Bryant Park (now Lincoln Center). From Lily of the Valley with her fairytale imagination; to Little Macaron, a line full of pop; to Lolita Nouveau who was inspired by regal elegance; to Candy Threads who showed off all kinds of Lolita styles.
Corazón Carmela, Perianth, I Do Declare, Morrigan NYC
Corazón Carmela models were bouncing down the runway with sheer joy that there’s a Lolita brand made for plus-size girls (and still feel beautiful). While Perianth, I Do Declare, and Morrigan NYC took the idea of the Lolita aesthetic and pushed it to the limits of everything but. The only disappointment was when it was over. Droves of people left for other panels while they switched to a designer spotlight/Q&A – a bit rude, but neccessary with the event scheduled so late at night. (I was also a guilty party, but I digress).

Saturday’s fashion show was short, sweet, but still a full house at 10AM. I skipped the Q&A to head back down to their booth. Like a typical con attendee, I spent Sunday looking for items to buy – though more like browsing through h. Naoto and Baby, the Stars Shine Bright booth. My favorite moment of the day was when I caught a glimpse of Ibi dancing with a cat-shaped Sixh bag.
By the end of the day Sunday, my suitcase was filled (but thankfully not stuffed) with a few more clothes to add to my Japanese brand inventory. As well as a necklace and earrings from Roserie.
All in all, it was a busy, but accomplished weekend and I would do it all again in a heartbeat. And my temporary shopgirl experience filled a tiny space in my once-in-a-lifetime dream of working at a Lolita shop.
Please check here for more pictures from the fashion show. (Note: Would like to ask that if you intend to use any pictures to please credit)
Did you attend Otakon or the fashion shows? How about the Q&A at the Alice and the Pirates/Baby, the Stars Shine Bright fashion show (I would really like to know how this went since I had to skip out)? If so, what was your with greatest memory or keepsake(s) of Otakon 2011?
Note: You may have noticed I’ve change my name. It’s more because I’ve come to the realization that more people, at least some Lolitas, know me by my real name as opposed Charlotte; and introduction-wise I don’t use a nom de plume, so I will make things simpler on my part and yours.
