Lolita Designers at Tokyo Rebel 8/1 – RVSP 7/23

Misako Aoki at Tokyo Rebel (2010)

Tokyo Rebel is a must for local and out-of-town Lolitas and lovers of J-fashion alike. And this year old store is making a big splash, holding events with special guests. Last year they had the opportunity to invite Misako Aoki to their store for a small signing. Around 100 people came (that’s big for the Lolita community) and the line was out the down with people just waiting to see the former Kawaii ambassador.

This year Tokyo Rebel gives local Lolitas a chance to meet the designers from Baby, the Stars Shine Bright, and Alice and the Pirates.  For those who are unable to make it to Otakon (for any reason, since they are guests this year), black out  Monday, August 1st, on your Hello Kitty calender.

From 6:00PM – 7:30PM ,  Masumi Kano (Fashion Designer, Baby, the Stars Shine Bright) and Mistuba (Chief Designer, Alice and the Pirates) will be signing autographs at this New York boutique. Due to the popularity of the designers and the size of the store, this is a RVSP-only event.

They will accepting RVSPs at 12PM on July 23rd.

Please check Tokyo Rebel’s post regarding this event for anymore info. What better way to meet new and reunite with old Lolitas. As well as pick up something up to add to your already overflowing Lolita wardrobe.

Hope to see you there!

The Mighty Harajuku Project

Harajuku is known as the area where Japanese youths go to express

themselves through fashion. From Goths, Lolitas, Punks, morigirls, decora and
cosplayers alike, they all come to Harajuku to become a melting pot of fashion styles and subcultures.
With the increase in “fast-fashion” and big box stores, the desire to be unique and creative with expensive brand-name items is in decline.
The Tohoku Earthquake discouraged a lot of people from visiting Harajuku because of that underlying fear of “the big one.” Not Sebastian Masuda. 6%DokiDoki was one of the first Harajuku shops to reopen, and Masuda has be recording the area’s recovery through pictures and Tweets.
This is known as the Mighty Harajuku Project.

It is an effort to bring together the people of Harajuku (i.e. people who live there, work there, have visited, want to visit) and provide strength and support to those who need it most. And most of all to give Japan the spirit to move forward.

This past weekend I attended Sakura Matsuri at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens where numerous fans of Japan congregated and admired the annual blooming of the cherry blossoms. I found this a perfect opportunity to find people who would be willing to help me out spread the word and show their support. (Signs used were from Electric Alice. Check out their blog and shop, as well as their Mighty Harajuku effort)

Uncle Yo gives his regards.

Misako Rocks! had a cold, but the sign says it all.

Andrea from The Weekend Lolita and fellow NYC Lolita, Mary Alice

Savannah and Aly (Her Lumpiness) were kind enough to lend their faces.

Chris from Sugar Bomb rocks her sign.
While looking from the rest of the world, Harajuku is a place that is admired.
It is a rare area that Japan can be proud of for constantly transmitting interesting information from a very edgy angle. If Harajuku loses its power, I have a strong feeling that Tokyo, Japan will lose a lot of its appeal. I want to let people know that we don’t want Harajuku, Tokyo or Japan to lose anything from the earthquake; and I think that by letting people know our thoughts, it would definitely encourage them as well. I am naming this project 【MIGHTY HARAJUKU PROJECT】, and show the world what is going on in Harajuku through photographs and simple words. I want to show thereality, both good and bad, of Harajuku to the rest of the world.

This is big news in the Lolita world. East Coast Lolitas won’t have to venture all the way to San Francisco for brand as Tokyo Rebel has announced today they will soon be carrying Baby the Stars Shine Bright and Alice and the Pirates.

It is great news after their previous announcement about no longer be stocking Angelic Pretty items. However, there’s still some AP items left in the store, so stop by before it’s all gone. (Note: Since they won’t be restocking, the items are all on sale!)

On January 8th from 1-4PM, the Morris-Jumel Mansion is inviting all children, adults, tea lovers, and Lolitas* for a good old fashioned Victorian tea party. A Year of Lolita and Resolutions

2010 was the Year of the Lolita

Now that Christmas is over, it’s onto celebrating the beginning of the end of 2010.

I’m not one for big crowds or standing in the cold for six hours waiting for a ball to drop, so I will be counting down indoors. Perhaps turning on ABC’s Rocking New Year’s Eve.

This year has been a very good year for me, especially in terms of Lolita.  I acquired three pieces from my “dream dress” wishlist. I’ve made a whole lot of Lolita friends — who’ve now become friends who just happen to be Lolitas. The fashion has slowly integrated into my regular fashion that I can barely tell the difference.

And then I started this blog.

After getting into Lolita, I wanted to create a blog — but I didn’t want those typical Lolita blogs where you talk about being a Lolita with occasional haul videos/posts. I wanted a blog that would still talk about Lolita but will additional tips that relates to Lolita, but also in regular life. It’s a long way from being one of the more known bloggers in the Lolita community, but I’m not losing steam yet which is good. So I do hope that you continue to read it and discover New York the way I have and continue to do so.
Although I’ve accomplished a lot in terms of Lolita, there’s always room for improvement. Instead of doing a regular list of resolutions that I know I’ll never accomplish, I’ve decided to create a list reserved just for Lolita:

  • Be more selective with brand purchases rather than splurge. (a.k.a. less impulse buys)
  • Try to acquire more casual pieces for hanging around the house.
  • Learn to navigate Baby’s new website.
  • Make time for hanging out with my Lolita friends.
  • Try fairy-kei or pop-kei.
  • Host a Lolita meet-up or panel.
  • Visit the FIT exhibit Japan Fashion Now.
  • Travel to San Francisco to shop at the Angelic Pretty store.
  • Think of new topics and places to see for Lolita and the City.

It’s not much, but it’s a good list to start the year on the right Lolita foot. I know there are a few things I can easily check off. What’s your New Year’s Resolution? Do you have resolutions reserved just for Lolita? Let’s hear them! They can been outrageous, practical, or just plain silly.

(Keep in mind resolutions are mainly to tell yourself that you have goals for the new year. Whether you make the effort to accomplish them is up to you.)

A Holiday So Nice, They Held It Twice.

It’s not officially marked on your calendar. You don’t have an extra day off from work or school. You don’t exchange presents (unless you want to). However despite the lack of perks, this holiday does have one: celebrating your love of Lolita fashion.

International Lolita Day (ILD) is a celebration of all things Lolita. With the increasing trend of Lolita fashion, girls (and boys) around the world wanted to have a day devoted to their love and dedication to the fashion to share with other Lolitas near or far or on the Internet. No one really knows how it began or who decided it, but it is an observant holiday that is equal to every known holiday combined.

Like Thanksgiving, we reflect on why and how we got into the fashion. Like Christmas, we get together with others. Like New Year’s, we think about how we’ve grown and how we should improve Lolita-selves. And like Easter, we dress in our finest and best to show the world how proud we are to be a part of a fashion that promotes layers, lace, and petticoats.

A fashion worn throughout the year, in all season — International Lolita Day was held twice a year to leave no frill behind. The first Saturday of June to show others you can still keep cool in petticoats and in December to teach others how bundling up can be less frumpy and more cute.

This Saturday marks my second year celebrating International Lolita Day. It was a tough decision on what to do this year, I’m going to see La Boheme at the Metropolitan Opera with friends.
